Prison officials say one Alabama inmate is dead and another is injured after they were struck by a vehicle while picking up trash on Interstate 10 near Loxley.
A Department of Corrections statement says five prisoners from the Loxley Community Work Center were cleaning up the highway when the two men were hit about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Officials say 32-year-old Kenric Isiah Turner died at the scene. He was serving 15 years in prison for a child abuse conviction in Madison County.
Kelvin Dejan Jordan was taken to a hospital by helicopter. There's no word on his condition. The 37-year-old prisoner is serving 15 years for a theft conviction in Lamar County.
