Gadsden Police say that there was a six-vehicle traffic accident with injuries involving a rescue vehicle late Monday evening. The accident happened around 11 p.m. at the intersection of E. Meighan Boulevard and Springfield Avenue. According to a report filed by Officer Jeff Hopper, ambulance driver Larry Shane Loudermilk was traveling east of E. Meighan Boulevard with lights and sirens activated.
Loudermilk slowed and traveled through the intersection, but just as he was about to cross out of the intersection, he was struck by a 2008 Kia Spectra, driven by Linda Avery Howard of Gadsden. Howard was traveling south on Springfield Avenue. As a result of this impact, the ambulance spun out of control and came to rest in the median. The Kia Spectra came to rest in a ditch on the northeast corner of the intersection. Randall Joseph Gibson, of Steele, was stopped in a 1998 Honda Civic at the traffic signal going eastbound on E. Meighan Boulevard. Stopped at the light behind Gibson was Lauren Elizabeth Williams, of Southside, driving a 2009 Ford Focus. As Jordan Elizabeth Dial, of Glencoe, approached the intersection traveling east on E. Meighan Boulevard, she realized that though the light was green, Gibson and Williams weren't moving. She swerved to avoid Williams, but struck her car. Dial was driving a 2005 Chevy Cavalier. Nancy Skiper Nix, of Fort Payne, was driving just behind Dial in a 1995 Ford Crown Victoria. She also realized too late that Williams and Gibson weren't moving. Nix attempted to brake, but due to the wet roads from earlier rains, she was unable to stop and slid into Williams. Williams' car then rammed into Gibson's. All vehicle except the Chevy Cavalier driven by Dial were totaled and towed fromt he scene. Williams and Nix were taken to Gadsden Regional for treatment. Howard and her passenger, Brenda Gray, were taken to Riverview Regional for treatment.
