Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson says officers will step up in their hunt for Desmonte Leonard, the suspect in the Auburn shooting that left 3 dead and another 3 wounded. At a press conference on Tuesday morning, Dawson announced that the reward for info leading to the suspect's arrest has been upped to $30,000. This comes after officers swarmed a home in East Montgomery on Monday night, but were unable to find evidence that Leonard had been in the home. Chief Dawson says they went to the home after a Montgomery 911 call reported Leonard being there. He explained in the news conference that officers did exactly what they were supposed to do. "What happened in Montgomery is what should have happened… If they get another call, they'll react the exact same way," said Dawson. Dawson refused to go over any evidence during the news conference and would not extrapolate on what went wrong with the tip on the residence. He also denied rumors that the FBI had focused on the wrong house in the search. "They may bring him out of the house yet. They have to be methodical in their search," said Dawson. The Chief instead focused on the dedication of the officers involved and emphasized the reason behind the manhunt. "Let's not forget why we're trying to locate him. He's taken three kids from their families," said Chief Dawson. According to Dawson, Leonard is still believed to be in the Montgomery area, but will still be hunted if he tries to go anywhere else. "We have the U.S. Marshals on this case. We have the FBI on this case. They're nationwide. We're going to apprehend him sooner or later," said Dawson. Chief Dawson says even Leonard's mother has joined the cause to get him to stop running. He says that she has left him several messages to turn himself in, but has not been able to contact her son. The Auburn Police Department now has all investigators working on the case, according to Dawson. He says he feels he owes it to the families of the victims to bring Desmonte Leornard to justice. "They came to Auburn but they're not coming home. Let's remember these families and keep them in our prayers," said Dawson about the victims and their grieving families.
