An Etowah County man was sentenced Monday to 37 years for murder and abuse of a corpse. Jeremy Grissom, 27, entered a guilty plea in April to the murder of his girlfriend, Monica Payne, and the abuse of her corpse.
Officials say Grissom killed Payne by beating her to death. At the time of the incident, the Etowah County Sheriff's Office said a family member visited Grissom at his home and found Payne's body wrapped in duct tape and stuffed into a duffel bag. The sheriff said it was obvious Grissom had planned the crime. Grissom hails from Hokes Bluff and Payne was from Dekalb County.
Judge David Kimberly sentenced Grissom to 27 years on the murder charge and 10 years on the abuse of a corpse. Those terms will be served consecutively. Forensics experts and character witnesses spoke before the judge issued the sentence in today's hearing. "The State of Alabama requested the maximum sentence in this case. The family of the victim has been through a tremendous amount of grief over the cruel and senseless murder of Monica," Chief Deputy District Attorney Marcus Reid said in a release about the sentencing. "Although the sentence was substantial, no sentence that the Court could impose would be sufficient in a case of this nature or clearly ease the sense of loss experienced by this family. We can only pray for healing and peace for the victim's family," Reid said.
