EMA restructuring with loss of 2 employees due to federal

Talladega County Emergency Management Agency’s Local Emergency Planning Committee learned Wednesday that five full-time positions will be whittled down to three.
Public Information Officer Steve Dover spoke on behalf of the Community Awareness Committee about upcoming changes in employee positions.
“One of those is going to be mine,” Dover later said. “They are restructuring and re-titling them. My position as public information officer will not be continued.”
Dover also said that three or four other positions will also be discontinued because they were directly tied to the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program when it was still active.
Dover also announced that the Talladega County EMA website is getting a “facelift.”
“We’re also wanting to get some groups set up where if you want to get weather updates or community updates, you can receive only those updates,” Dover said.
He said those two projects are on his list to accomplish before his contract with Talladega County EMA ends due to CSEPP funds being cut.
At the meeting Wednesday morning, there was a presentation from American Red Cross District Emergency Services specialist Alison Griner.
Griner explained Red Cross’ services and broke down its internal organization and regional information.
“We’re still the Red Cross we were before,” Griner said.
She then showed Red Cross’ regional map of Alabama that listed the regions as: North Alabama, Middle Alabama, Central Alabama, and South Alabama.
Talladega County is located in the Middle Alabama region.
But Griner emphasized the fact that although the state is broken up into regions, every region helps with resources when necessary.
“When the tornadoes hit, by noon we had resources from as far as Mobile,” Griner said.
She then broke down the internal organization of the Red Cross, and informed the committee that she is the specialist for Talladega, St. Clair, Shelby, Jefferson, Cullman, Winston and Blount counties.
The next local Emergency Planning Committee meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. May 9.
