A Columbiana woman was sentenced to nine years in prison Thursday for a murder-for-hire plot against her former son-in-law. Barbara Louise Patterson, 64, was convicted in February of conspiring to murder her daughter's ex-husband. Her daughter, Kimberly Dawn McGuffie, was sentenced in May to 10 years in prison for the murder-for-hire plot. Officals say the mother and daughter plotted to pay someone to kill McGuffie's husband with a prescription drug cocktail. Authorities say some of the drugs that were to be used in the poisonous cocktail were supplied by Patterson. U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance said the murder plot was connected to McGuffie's child custody battle with her former husband. "If this mother and daughter had allowed the child custody dispute at the base of this case to be worked out in court, they could be with the children they love, not locked inside a prison," Vance said. "The Shelby County Sheriff's Department, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the FBI came together in this case to work on information from an informant and stopped a plot from becoming a murder," Vance added. Court testimony revealed the pair asked an acquaintance help them kill McGuffie's ex-husband in August 2009. The acquaintance they spoke to went to police and became an informant. He met with McGuffie at a parking lot in Calera in September 2009 on a ruse of introducing her to the hit man he had found to do the job. McGuffie handed over the prescription drugs, a map to her ex's houuse and a $1,000 check to the supposed hit man, who was actually an undercover police officer. McGuffie and Patterson were indicted for the crime in March 2011. After the sentencing, Judge Abdul Kallon ordered Patterson to be taken into custody immediately.
