To the blind eye, cans of soda seized Wednesday afternoon look like any other drink. But at close to 20 bucks a pop they hold more than a sugary substance.
Etowah County Drug Enforcement agents seized seized multiple illegal items at Pleasure Treasures in Gadsden Wednesday at 3:20 p.m. Among the items seized were bongs, pipes, scales, and more than two pounds of synthetic marijuana. "This person knew what he was doing. He knew what the purpose of it was. He knew it was illegal," said Etowah County Drug Enforcement Commander Robert Savage. After a tip from a concerned citizen and two weeks of undercover work, agents went in and arrested three people at Pleasure Treasure's. The owner and two people who were in the process of making a purchase were taken to the Etowah County Jail. "The most concerning thing there was children being taken into that store and in fact there was one less than a 10-year-old child still inside the store when we made entry," said Savage. On the surface the store looks like a new age shop that claims to sell incense, t-shirts and jewelry. At least that's what Justin White still believes. "It's just a head shop. It's a good store, good people," said White. Even after being told the shop did indeed sell illegal drugs White said he still didn't have any qualms about it. "It said it's 100% chemical free, it's just natural herbs and plants. It's legal in all 50 states," said White. But it's not. Agents say it's all the same. "Possession of synthetics is exactly the same as possession of the original base product whether it be cocaine, methamphetamines or marijuana. It's the same thing," said Savage. The shop remains closed but the problem of synthetic drugs in the area still exists. "This is clearly the number one issue that I believe we will face over the next five years," said Savage. Before the bust agents watched 15 to 20 purchases take place. They say buyers looked to be in their teens and early 20's.
