A sexual predator was sentenced to 30 years in prison on rape and sexual abuse charges. Thomas Reilly, 61, was convicted April 5 of first degree rape and four counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12. He was sentenced Wednesday, May 30 by Judge Allen Millican in an Etowah County courtroom. Four young victims testified against Reilly during his trial. Testimonies revealed that Reilly allowed the young girls to spend the night with him on Saturdays on the premise of taking them to church at The Tabernacle on Sunday mornings. The victims said when they were left alone with Reilly, he touched them inappropriately and raped one of the girls, who was seven years old at the time. All of Reilly's victims ranged between the ages of five and 10 years old.
According to a release from the Etowah County District Attorney, these charges were not the first time Reilly was investigated for allegations of sexual abuse. Evidence included in the Presentence Report prepared by the Alabama Department of Pardons and Paroles said reports of sexual abuse, indecent exposure and enticing a child for immoral purposes were filed against Reilly with the Gadsden Police Department in 1997. An investigation involving underage children was conducted, but formal charges were never brought against Reilly at that time. Reilly is being held in the Etowah County Jail.
