Alabama is the first state to implement a stop smoking family plan for mothers. One of the preventable causes of mortality is to improve the health of the mother.
Alabama received federal approve back in April to extend the Plan First program to add smoking cessation counseling and medication for mothers.
In Alabama 15% of all mothers smoked while they were pregnant and 35% of thos women have low income Medicaid coverage. Research shows that smoking cessation will save Medicaid programs money in the future.
