Calhoun County deputies today arrested an Anniston man on charges of distribution of a controlled substance.
Carl Lackey was arrested after deputies served a search warrant at his store, Cosmic Debris, on Quintard Avenue on suspicion that synthetic marijuana products, commonly called “spice,” were being sold there, according to Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson.
“We’ve continued to receive information from a variety of sources that had suggested sales had been going on at Cosmic Debris,” Amerson said. “We are conducting an investigation of sales of spice in Calhoun County.”
Amerson said laws passed by the Alabama Legislature in the last month have made the possession and sale of the products illegal.
“It’s the same as if you were selling cocaine or any other controlled substance,” Amerson said.
Deputies closed the store around 11:30 a.m. and searched the scene with a dog. Lackey was at the store when deputies arrived and was taken into custody.
Amerson said deputies were still interviewing Lackey at 4:30 p.m.
“The thing that is most upsetting is the majority of sales that we’ve encountered have been to young people,” Amerson said. “We’ve seen tragedy involving young people and spice in Calhoun County.”
Bond for Lackey had not been set as of 4:30 p.m.
