The Alabama 2012 Special Olympics was held at Troy University in Troy, Alabama on May 19th. The athletes were engaged and ready to start the events. Track and field had many events from the 100 meter dash to long jump. There was also softball throw, 4x1 relay, 400 meters, 800 meters, and wheel chair 25 meter dash. “Let us win, but if we do not win, let us be brave in the attempt” is the motto for all the participants. I feel everyone needs to have this quote stored into their memory banks. Volunteering at this event was a life changing one that I will never forget. Several individuals that are impaired in some way did not allow anything to stop them from competing. They gave their best efforts without a single complaint. It was great to see individuals win gold, silver, and bronze metals as they cheered on for each other. I could not believe how enthusiastic these people were. The Special Olympics to them is comparable to professional sports such as the NBA playoffs or the Superbowl. It was truly an honor to be a part of this great event that changes people lives in ways never thought of in some instances. Always give your best efforts in what you are doing and be blessed in your coming and going.
