More charges have been filed against Kirt Bernard Benson, the man accused of dragging his estranged girlfriend by a vehicle down Highway 25 in Wilsonville on Sunday, May 20. On May 22, Benson was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals at a motel in Alexander City on charges of second degree domestic violence and violation of a protection from abuse order. In addition to those charges, investigators charged Benson today with one count of attempted murder, first degree kidnapping, third degree domestic violence and two counts of domestic violence by strangulation or suffocation. His total bond on all charges now adds up to $762,000. The victim in the May 20 incident was treated for her injuries and has been released from the hospital. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says Benson's criminal history includes 10 previous arrests and several convictions on for assault and domestic violence related crimes. Benson is currently in custody of the Shelby County Jail.
