There's a disagreement over possible bullying in Blount County. A sixth grader's mother says the boy went to the hospital after he was attacked by another student. The Superintendent says it's a one time issue, but the victim's mother says it could have been prevented.
The Blount County School System has a no bullying policy, but Wanda Cowan says it failed to protect her child. She thinks teachers need to do more about bullying, but the Superintendent says the principal took appropriate actions following the incident.
"I don't want to come home and find him somewhere hung, because he's been bullied, I don't want that."
Wanda Cowan says teachers at Blountsville Elementary did nothing as her son, a sixth grader, was severely beaten by another student in a hallway. "I think the teachers need to step up and when a fight happens or a jump, like my son was jumped. They need to get in there and pull him off, don't leave it up to another student to break it off."
Cowan says the student has bullied other children. She believes if the school system stepped in sooner, her son could have avoided becoming a target. She showed us letters other parents sent school leaders. "This is not the first time this has happened and it has been brought to the schools attention."
Blount County School Superintendent James Carr did not want to go on camera, but called the incident between Cowan's son and the other student an isolated issue. Carr says the Principal took appropriate measures by suspending the student and charges have been filed with the Juvenile Probation Office. He stands by the school's no bullying policy.
But even knowing this, Cowan is worried about her son's future. School ends Tuesday, but she doesn't want the student to return to high school next year. Superintendent Carr could not say whether the boy would be back. He says that decision will be up to a district judge.
Cowan says "I'm not out to get this kid, this kid needs help. If he has that much anger to do that much damage in that amount of time, he needs help." We asked Superintendent Carr about Cowan's concerns regarding the teachers during the incident. He said, this did not sound like something teachers in the school system would do.
