Melinda Mayfield and her children live right behind the BP gas station along Highway 25 in Wilsonville. She says nothing really happens around here -- that is, until Sunday. "I'm scared and shocked but this is a quiet community and I'm surprised. I've never heard of anything happening like that around here," said Mayfield. It's in the BP parking lot where a Shelby County deputy found a 32-year-old Sylacauga woman. Two witnesses called authorities to say they'd seen the woman dragged by a vehicle and within a matter of minutes a deputy found the woman lying in the BP parking lot.
"As the vehicle was moving she was either trying to get in the vehicle or trying to get out of the vehicle and at some point got drugged by the vehicle," said Shelby County Sheriff's Captain Ken Burchfield. Now, deputies are looking for 42-year-old Kirt Bernard Benson, the victim's estranged boyfriend. He's been charged with second degree domestic violence and another for violation of a protection from abuse order. "It's not uncommon to see domestic violence spiral upward and so that may very well be what this is. That's what it looks like here is that you've had domestic violence events and now we've got one that is significantly worse," said Captain Burchfield. The two had what has been described as an on-again-off-again relationship for the past two years. In January Benson was arrested and a month later, the victim filed a restraining order against him. "This may not have been a singular event that happened yesterday. In other words there may have been some stuff that led up to this," added Captain Burchfield. Deputies are continuing to interview the victim. Burchfield said there could be another suspect involved in this case and says it's likely there will be more charges. He didn't say whether it would be against Benson or an additional suspect. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries and is still recovering in the hospital.
