During the Memorial Day celebrations, the AFC, Alabama Forestry Commission, want everyone to be safe and to take precautions with any outdoor burning around tornado-damaged areas.
Since the 2011 tornados, thousands of damaged timber still remains on the ground, which has caused a wildfire hazard in the Northern Alabama region. The AFC recommend that residents wait until a reasonable amount of rain to fall before burning anything outdoors or to obtain a burn permit, if burning any field greater than one-quarter acre or within 25 feet of flammable material.
Some safety tips for outdoor burning include:
1. Not burning on a windy day
2. Clearing down to mineral soil around the area to be burned
3. Having enough tools, equipment, and manpower to safely control your fire
4. Always stay with the fire until it is completely out
In case of any emergency, the AFC do not want residents to try to extinguish the fire themselves, but encourages them to call 911 immediately. If you are interested in obtaining a burn permit please call (800) 242-2504 and for more information on burning outdoors please visit Alabama Forestry Commission
