Governor Bentley announced that May 20-26 would be the first National Prevention Week in Alabama. ADMH, the Alabama Department of Mental Health, will be hosting events throughout the week to raise awareness about substance abuse and promote prevention. National Prevention Week was scheduled near the summer because the summer season are filled with many celebrations including weddings, proms, graduation and camping trips, which are connected to substance use and abuse. Among adults, alcohol use is the leading cause of about 79,000 preventable deaths per year in the US, and injection drugs contribute to about 16% of new HIV infections in the US. During this week, Alabamians will be informed on how to live a healthy lifestyle without the use of substance abuse. Some of the themes for this week are:
Monday, May 21 – Prevention of Underage Drinking
Tuesday, May 22 – Prevention of Prescription Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Use
Wednesday, May 23 – Prevention of Alcohol Abuse
Thursday, May 24 – Suicide Prevention
Friday, May 25 – Promotion of Mental, Emotional and Behavioral Well-Being
ADMH wants to encourage Alabamians to come out and participate in National Prevention Week. For more information on National Prevent Week activities and prevention services visit Alabama Department of Mental Health .
