Last Friday, Governor Robert Bentley signed House Bill 658, which was created to simplify Alabama’s existing immigration law.
Governor Bentley was determined to make the law better and feel that they have achieved this goal with the revision. The burden is off legal residents and businesses and main focus is that if someone is employed or is a resident of the state that they must be legal.
Bentley added that the bill passed by the Senate did not incorporate all of the changes that he intended, but the bill did include most of the suggested revisions. Bentley did not agree with spending state funds to create a database with the illegal immigrant’s names. Another one of his concerns were regarding the school provisions on the original law. The provision is enjoined by federal court, but is not currently in effect.
Bentley felt that there were too many good aspects in the House Bill for it to go unsigned, so the bill was signed, which will help Alabama move forward with other business and special sessions.
