Several staff members at "The Basement" are speaking out in support of their founder, Matt Pitt, who was arrested Saturday morning. He is charged with impersonating a police officer. "The Basement" is a faith-based movement that started in Birmingham and has spread across the country. Shannon Zeigler and Brad Boyd have known the youth evangelist since college. Zeigler and Boyd are both staff members at "The Basement" and describe Matt as a dynamic leader. "He comes off and he's got the haircut and he's wild and he's loud but if you ever sit down with him he can make you cry in an instant because his heart is so golden and it's for one purpose to reach souls," said Zeigler. Boyd said, "He is one of the most energetic off the wall passionate people I've ever met. I've never met anyone so driven. I've never met anyone that doesn't - a lot of people who are driven care about themselves . I'm driven and I'm gonna succeed. I've never met anyone who pushes other leaders," Zeigler and Boyd say it's that passion that has lead "The Basement" to a nationwide movement. "He's such an awesome man," said Zeigler, "The one word I think of when I think of him is genuine." That hasn't changed with Pitts arrest early Saturday morning. Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley says Pitt impersonated a police officer on Interstate 65. Lemley says Pitt was driving a white, unmarked Tahoe with flashing blue lights and a siren. "When we made the traffic stop, he did display a badge and showed it to the officers as well as a photo ID card which looks similar to a law enforcement photo ID card, very similar," said Lemley, "When we pulled him over he made the statement he was a deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office." Despite these accusations against Pitt, Boyd and Zeigler say they're standing by him. "I'm 100% to the gospel on Matt's side and we won't stop. We just want to reach people," said Zeigler. "Man, all I can say is I support Matt. I love him. I've got his back 100%," said Boyd.
