The Ragland community in Saint Clair County is grieving Katelynn Arnold's death. The 9-year-old was found hanging in a tree Thursday night. Her 14-year-old half brother is charged with her murder. Neighbors say Katelynn's best friend lived across the street. "They were best friends, every evening they road their bike," said Ricky Campbell. Campbell's 5-year-old granddaughter, Malia, learned how to ride her bike without training wheels thanks to Katelynn. They also played on Campbell's swing set and waited for the school bus together. Telling Malia about Katelynn's death wasn't easy. "I said ‘Katelynn has went to where your Daddy is at in heaven,'" said Campbell. Malia is understandably upset about the news. Neighbors still have lots of questions about what happened. "We're all trying to figure it out. I'm still puzzled too. All just been trying to figure out why, how could you do that?" asked Campbell. Police aren't releasing the suspect's name. Campbell says he doesn't know much about the boy but witnessed troubling behavior towards his sister. "He was a little on the mean side to the one who died. He was on the rough side with her," said Campbell. Campbell says to his knowledge the boy was never rough with his granddaughter but he always kept a close eye on him. As for the boy's legal guardians, his aunt and uncle, Campbell spoke highly of them. "Very good people, they took good care of them kids. Fed 'em, clothes 'em, bathed 'em. Always on the bus. Always very good people," said Campbell.
