Starting Monday, May 14 at 12:01 a.m. ALDOT will close the southbound lanes of I-59 from the Alabama Adventure Parkway exit to north of the CSX railroad overpass in Bessemer. ALDOT closed the northbound lanes along the same stretch of highway in April and have since reopened them to traffic. The southbound lanes of I-59 will be shutdown for 1.7 miles from Exit 110 to north of the CSZ railroad overpass. I-459 will be designated as a detour route. The repaving project is rebuilding a 33-year-old stretch of the interstate with a method called rubblization, which uses the crushed original roadway as a base for the new asphalt lanes. ALDOT officials have set a target of 35 days for the completion of the construction work. The repaving project on the northbound lanes had a 30-day target for completion and were able to be finished in only 26 days. "A $30,000 per day incentive/disincentive is included in the contract with the bonus or penalty to the contractor calculated upon completion," ALDOT spokesperson Linda Crockett said in a release. ALDOT says the expected deadline for the entire project is early summer. For more information on the project's progress, check www.Progress59.com
