Update on assaulted postal employee

WDNG has received numerous calls from people asking about a postal Employee having been assaulted. Pamela just received this update.

Three black males, possibly mid 20s, located near mail receptacle. One male tried to enter the vehicle by physically assaulting the carrier. No mail was stolen. Suspects fled. The US Postal Service’s Notice of Reward , Poster 296, states that they offer up to $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of individuals responsible for assaulting a postal employee performing their duty. Tips, including anonymous tips, can be called to the US Postal Inspection Service National Law Enforcement Communication Center, NLECC, at 877-876-2455.

This month marks our annual Consumer Protection efforts. Currently, I have stacks of express mail envelopes and first class mailings that were intended to reach unwary victims here in Alabama . Many are addressed to Anniston residents. One of the most common schemes hitting Alabama is the “Mystery Shopper” scam. It encloses a letter regarding your selection as a mystery shopper, a counterfeit cashier’s check or money order, a series of things to buy and test, the last of which is wiring some of the money to an account to “test Western Union” or some other vender’s customer friendliness. Initial contact may or may not originate via the internet. If the victim communicates with the scammer but fails to act on the ploy, he or she will begin receiving threatening email or phone calls from the scammers.

There are also reshipping schemes and fraud perpetrated against people advertising items for sell via internet or newsletter/newspaper adds that continue to have their victims. Dating sites also have their share of Alabama victims. One college graduate wound up owing the bank $16,000 over what he thought was a long lost classmate that express a romantic interest on-line.
