The mother of 13-year-old Jaqures Cortez Walker, who police say was shot and killed while trying to rob someone, is very upset. LaTonya Walker says she's not getting enough information about the case from the DA's office.
LaTonya Walker says she has a lot of unanswered questions about why more charges weren't filed in this case, against either the other teens who were allegedly with her son earlier in the night or against the man who shot and killed him. She's also upset with local media for showing a photo posted on Facebook of Walker holding up a gun.
Walker says she hasn't heard anything from Birmingham police or the Jefferson County District Attorney's office and says she doesn't believe the version of events she's heard so far that says Jaqures Walker acted alone. "I don't, I really don't," Walker said. "Because I know my child. And if he left with some older guys, the question is did they threaten him to do this? Were y'all trying to make him get in a gang? I mean it's questions that I need to know that I doesn't have, I need to find out these answers." Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls said Tuesday his office usually doesn't communicate with families in cases where they decline to file charges. That usually falls to detectives who are handling the case. In this case, where Walker was the suspect as well as a victim, Falls said it would've been "extremely unusual" to talk to Mrs. Walker, but he's willing to meet with her. After that press conference, LaTonya Walker came to Falls' office for a private meeting but FOX6 hasn't heard from Mrs. Walker about what was said there.
