Two members of Anniston’s boys’ track team walked away champions at the AHSAA 4A state meet Saturday.
Vashad Wilson bounced back from a second-place finish to teammate Andre Patton at last week’s sectional meet at Lincoln with a first-place of his own in the 100-meter.
He ran a blistering 10.97 to best both Patton, who placed third with a time of 11.24 and Beauregard’s Ladarius Manuel (11.11).
Patton captured a state championship for himself in the 200-meter dash, running a 22.48 to finish ahead of Manuel (22.68) and Dallas County’s Kelsey Tripp (22.75).
Anniston’s DaMonta Miller was third in the long jump at 21-00.25.
Miller and Patton combined with L.J. Heard and Fred Jordan to take third in the 1,600-meter relay.
Anniston’s boys finished sixth overall in Class 4A with 48 points, behind Lincoln (52) Alabama Christian (56), Beauregard (59), Dadeville (67) and UMS-Wright (106.50).
Anniston sophomore Quanetria Bolton won a state title in the girls shot put with a throw of 34-02.25 nearly two feet longer than Wilson’s Ciarra Edwards (32-03.75), who placed second.
Bolton also placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 103-08.
The Lady Bulldogs 400-meter team comprised of De’ara Welch, Davia Palmer, Tedeidra Long and Fredricka Jordan captured a state title with a time of 50.56.
Jordan also placed third in the 100, running a 12.53.
The 3,200 meter-relay squad of Rakeema Najiy, LaVisha Cannon, Brittney Stansil and Lewis finished third with a 4:21.23.
“That was the first time we medaled in that event. So, that was big for us,” Anniston coach Lisa Howard said.
Long and Stansil teamed up with Jasmine Heard and Apryl Lewis to place third in the 1,600-meter relay.
Carsheuna Curry was fifth in the triple jump with a 33-02.
The Lady Bulldogs were fourth overall with 65 points behind Brooks (70), Beauregard (102) and UMS-Wright (148).
Class 1A-2A-3A
SELMA — Piedmont’s girls 400-meter relay team comprised of BreAnna Thompson, Riesha Thompson, Sarah Garner and Sarah Martin finished second in Class 3A behind Sheffield with a time of 51.65.
BreAnna Thompson was fourth in the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 13.05.
Donoho’s Kendall Stewart was fourth in the 1A discus with a throw of 89-04.
Notable performers in the boys’ meet included Handley’s Dexter Reese who was third in the 3A long jump with a leap of 20-10.50. Dale Reddick of White Plains was fourth int the 3A 300-meter hurdles at 43.45. Saks’ Cole Thompson was right behind Reddick, running a 43.88.
Piedmont’s boys 1,600-meter team placed fourth in the state with a time of 3:43.24.
The team was made up of Clay Dent, Michael DeVoe, Jamaal Young and Cody Daughtry.
