Texting while driving will be the subject of much decision in a Jefferson County manslaughter trial that begins Monday morning. Rural/Metro ambulance driver, Sherry Stone, is charged with killing Norma Ellen Alexander during a November 2009 car accident. Court records show Stone crashed into the rear of Alexander's vehicle on 1-20/59 in Bessemer. The vehicle went off the road, struck a retaining wall, returned to the highway and flipped at least twice. Alexander was ejected from the passenger seat of the car and died. Her daughter, Lisa Alexander, who was driving the car was injured. Attorneys for Alexander say Stone was speeding and texting at the time of the accident. Stone was arrested in June of 2010.
Bessemer police got a copy of video captured by the ambulance's dash board camera. Stone's attorney wants the judge to restrict the use of that video in court. In the motion for a protection order, he wrote it could "evoke or inflame passions and emotions and unfairly prejudice one or more parties." There is also a wrongful death suit against Stone filed in civil court.
