For the second time in less than 24 hours, we have news of more jobs coming to Alabama. On Monday evening, Hyundai announced nearly 900 jobs will be added to the company's Montgomery plant in September. Today in a press conference, Governor Robert Bentley announced 500 more positions are coming to the state. The 530 new full time positions are with Walter Energy, Inc. The average estimated salary is expected to be in the $120,000 range. The jobs are a part of the Company's Blue Creek Energy Project which will develop underground coal mines in Tuscaloosa County. The project also includes a terminal at the Port of Mobile and facilities in Walker and Fayette Counties. Walter Energy already operates coal mines in Alabama. Company officials say a major reason this new project got the green light was due to the Alabama Legislature passing House Bill 144 which expanded the state's existing incentives to the coal mining industry. Governor Bentley says this project is proof that incentives work. "This is a good example against the argument that says incentives are not important if we're going to compete with the other states around us. We need that. We need incentive packages," said Bentley. The Blue Creek Energy Project will require an estimated $1.2 billion capital investment. It is expected to be operating by 2018. Walter Energy is headquartered in Hoover and has other mines around the world. In all, the company has 4,400 employees.
