OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Baltimore Ravens have selected Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw with the 35th overall pick in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-2, 272-pound Upshaw could fill the void left by the departure of free agent outside linebacker Jarret Johnson.
Upshaw is the first player taken by Baltimore in the draft.
Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome didn't make a selection in the first round, choosing instead to deal the 29th overall pick to the Minnesota Vikings for the 35th pick and a fourth-rounder.
Newsome said Thursday night that there were enough good players left to make it worth moving back six notches to get an extra pick in the draft.
Baltimore has another second-round pick (60th overall) and also owns the 91st overall pick, late in the third round.
