MONTGOMERY - AL - A bill to streamline the way businesses file state and local taxes in Alabama is on its way to the governor's desk. The state Senate on Thursday signed off on changes made by the House. The bill would create a single electronic system for businesses to file their local sales, rental, use and lease taxes. The measure was touted by leadership in both chambers of the Alabama Legislature. House Speaker Mike Hubbard says it is a step in the right direction toward eliminating red tape and promoting private-sector growth. Currently, taxpayers doing business in more than one city or county must file separate tax returns with each local jurisdiction. The Alabama Retail Association says some retailers in the state can file up to 150 different returns.
