Talladega- Police are investigating the theft of $175,000 worth of feed corn from the Koch Foods feed mill on Alabama 21, according to Capt. Leon Thomas.
This is the equivalent of 25 tractor trailer loads, he said.
The thefts appear to have taken place between Dec. 1, 2011, and Monday evening. The incident and offense report also lists some $80,000 in property damage, although the property is not described in the report.
At least some of the suspects involved will be Koch employees, Thomas said.
Capt. Ronny Jones is leading the investigation and said he has so far gotten conflicting information regarding what actually happened. The property damage listed in the report appears to be a mistake, he said.
Jones said he is waiting on contact with an official higher up in the company to help sort things out. He has also contracted federal authorities for advice on how to proceed. It was not immediately clear whether or not the federal government might take over the case entirely.
If the case does stay with the state, anyone convicted in connection with theft of property in the first degree would face two to 20 years in prison.
