On UAB's campus, Thursday, many students hadn't heard the news. A potential leak involving thousands of former students' personal information. UAB recently sent a letter to former students who were at the university between 1995 and 2006 warning them that their information, such as social security numbers and academic records, had been unintentionally posted on the Internet. "Yeah, I suppose it raises the risk of identity theft," Foti Sardelis said. Students on campus now say even though they're not directly at risk, it's still a big concern. "Identity theft," Patricia Sanders said. "Because that's really big right now in the media." "A lot of damage could be done to businesses and people financially, I think," Sardelis said. "That information is private," Katie Shaffer said. "The information you give to the university is between you and the university. There's all sorts of rules and laws about not giving that out to anyone else." The school is offering free credit protection for one year for those affected by the leak. Some say that's not good enough. "They need to offer something," Shaffer said. "But, I guess, if that's as good as they can do..." "What about everybody else, unaffected," Sardelis said. "What if this happens again, when are they going to upgrade the system? Maybe they should offer some kind of protection for everybody." UAB Media Relations Director, Clinton Colmenares, says the situation happened as a result of an error by one employee. He says the mistake was corrected the same day as soon as it became apparent. Colmenares says about 8,000 students are affected who were enrolled in the 11-year span. To help combat this problem in the future, Colmenares says the university no longer uses social security numbers as a means for student identification.
