A young girl is recovering from severe burns this morning after coming in contact with an electrical ground transformer. It happened Monday night at the Liberty Park Sports Complex in Vestavia Hills.
The six-year-old was flown by helicopter to the hospital for treatment. The girl, identified as Caroline Wilson, was in fair condition at Children's Hospital Tuesday night.
Vestavia Hills mayor Alberto Zaragoza says the child is from Homewood and was playing at the Liberty Sports complex with her parents and brother, who was playing in a soccer match. Mayor Zaragoza says the girl was playing on a nearby playground when she wandered inside the fence surrounding a large green transformer. "There was a board missing and evidently she crawled through the board and got inside the enclosure," Zaragoza said. Wilson came in contact with an electrical current that left her severely burned.
Tuesday, the tranformer's panel had individual locks on them, but Zaragoza says those were not in place Monday night.
Alabama Power officials say the transformer does not belong to them, but the mayor and his staff were going over survey maps and contracts on Tuesday to find out for sure. "At this present time, we're still trying to figure out whose property it is, whether Alabama Powers' or Vestavia Hills'," Zaragoza said. The mayor admits there is concern about liability in the matter, but added that the city's biggest focus right now is on the little girl, hoping she will make a full recovery. Power at the transformer has been turned off until the investigation is complete.
