It’s a story that refuses to go away.
The life and crimes of Audrey Marie Hilley — the so-called “black widow” of Anniston — will once again be the subject of a television show. Film crews from New York City-based Optomen Productions were at the Hilton Garden Inn in Oxford Thursday to collect interviews and shoot footage for a Discovery Channel documentary on the case.
Hilley gained notoriety in the 1980s when it was discovered she had poisoned and killed her husband and attempted to do the same to her two children. Her life inspired two true crime novels as well as a made-for-television movie.
The show’s producer, Frank Bova, said he couldn’t release details about the specifics of the program, but did say the crew will interview Hilley’s daughter, Carol, as well as Gary Carroll, a former Anniston police officer who worked the Hilley case. The crew will be in Atlanta today to talk to Hilley’s son, Mike.
A Blue Mountain native, Hilley lived in Anniston most of her life. After police arrested her for murder, she fled to New Hampshire where she lived under the identity Robbi Homan. Hilley was eventually captured after changing her identity again and placing a fake obituary in a local newspaper.
Hilley died in 1987 after attempting to flee while on a weekend furlough at the Anniston Inn. Police found her two days later near Saks suffering from hypothermia.
