Officials at the Calhoun County Animal Shelter say they hope a Facebook message helps track down a stolen dog. They're concerned the thieves might do something cruel with the dog. A walker hound named Walker was discovered missing after Wednesday's burglary, along with a weedeater, a hedgetrimmer and a shovel. The shelter is located on Parkwood Drive near the Saks community. Center director Karon Johnston says the thieves cut a hole in a rear fence, which is adjacent to a heavily wooded area. She believes the thieves have made a trail to that fence. Johnston says despite Walker's dogpen having three locks, workers found it empty. "You can always hear Walker's bark, he's got that distinctive, loud, long hound bark," Johnston recalled. But she didn't hear it this time. She says she found the fence cut at the site of a previous break-in, in which a pit bull was taken. Johnston says she's concerned the thieves might have cruel intentions.
"The first thing that came through my head was, you know, they've got this dog as a bait dog for a fighting ring." But she also thinks the thieves might have wanted Walker as a hunting dog or a breeder, since he's a purebred, or perhaps they wanted to sell him to someone for one of those two purposes. Since Walker has been in the shelter's care since he was a puppy, they're convinced this was not a case of an owner trying to take back a dog. Regardless, she and her shelter boosters are not taking any chances. They've circulated the story on Facebook, including word of a $500 reward offered by an anonymous person, for Walker's safe return. Late Friday, Anniston Police Lt. Fred Forsythe said the investigators so far haven't tracked down any leads in the case. If anyone knows Walker's whereabouts, they're urged to contact the Anniston Police Department at 256-238-1800 or the Calhoun County Animal Shelter at 256-236-1581.
