A former Shelby County correction officer turned herself into the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Friday after being charged with custodial sexual misconduct. Twnica Newton, a 32-year-old woman from Calera, worked as a correction officer in the Shelby County Jail for seven years. An inmate made a complaint in February alleging there had been misconduct from a correction officer. Newton resigned from her position Feb. 15 after she was questioned about the complaint. "Correctional administrators and Sheriff's investigators immediately began an investigation and discovered that the correction officer had indeed violated established policies and procedures," the sheriff's office said in a press release. Sheriff Chris Curry made a formal request to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to review the case. The ABI investigation led to the warrant and Newton's arrest. Newton was arrested Friday, April 20 and released on a $15,000 bond. The charge of custodial sexual misconduct is a Class C felony.
