AUBURN, Alabama -- The crowd cheered Auburn's three Heisman Trophy winners Saturday, and the winners responded in kind.
"It's always great to be home at Auburn!" Cam Newton said during a ceremony to unveil statues honoring the school's three Heisman winners.
Newton, Bo Jackson and Pat Sullivan all made moving speeches, but Newton added an element of fun with a poem he composed for the occasion.
Jackson gave it a '6.' Sullivan gave it a '10.' Everybody laughed.
Newton began by demanding "War Eagle" from the crowd. He kept at it until it met his approval.
"It's humbling to share this stage with each of you," Newton said.
Newton said his statute shouldn't honor him, but the 2010 BCS national championship.
Jackson said he grew at Auburn.
"When I came here in 1982, I was a young, immature kid. Four years later, I left a respectable young man. I did not do that on my own," Jackson said.
Jackson said he wished his mother could have been there for the occasion. He died in 1992.
"She was my biggest fan on this planet," he said.
He ended his speech with: "Other places say they love their sports. Here, we love Auburn."
Sullivan thanked the two most important people in his young life: His dad and former coach Shug Jordan.
"I know I didn't win this by myself. I know Bo and Cam feel the same way," Sullivan said.
Sullivan ended his speech with the words he said when he won the award in 1971:
"Maybe other people deserve this honor more than me, but from the bottom of my heart, no one will appreciate this more than me."
