It's not every night school board meetings get people fired up, but tonight was a different story in Leeds. It was a packed house dealing with all kinds of rumors and accusations. One woman at the meeting said, "I think with all of complaints we heard tonight, you need to leave." She was talking to the Superintendent of the Leeds City School System, John Moore. One reason people packed the board meeting upset is because they thought the board was going to fire the head football coach, Keith Etheredge. A woman in the meeting said, "Coach Etheredge is one of the best things that ever happened to this school system." The worry came about after the football team had to forfeit every win of its entire season because of an ineligible player. Superintendent Moore says it was rumor Etheredge would lose his job. John Moore said, "I think it's unfortunate we've had a setback in the athletic program. The fact there was a violation has nothing whatsoever to do with his future as football coach." Coach Etheredge says he was more concerned about the student involved in the situation. Etheredge said, "The young man is great, has a fantastic family. It's unfortunate for him worse than anything else. Our kids know they won 10 ballgames on the field." Another heated topic is that people are accusing the superintendent of mistreating employees. Representatives with the AEA were at the meeting to speak on behalf of one employee who says Moore lost his temper with her. Lance Hyche, with AEA, said, "It's not acceptable for him to demean, talk down to a woman. We won't stand for that." Moore says he couldn't speak about that accusation against him, but said he would consider apologizing. John Moore said, "That is an employee/employer matter. I respect all of my employees." Here are some other things that came up: Some parents complained about students being out of control at the middle school. Parents also accused the board of trying to cover up an alleged student/teacher relationship at the high school. Moore says the school board and the Leeds Police Department investigated the alleged inappropriate relationship and he says there are no merits to the allegation.
