Four months after an arrest on misdemeanor charges, Anniston city councilor Ben Little has filed a $1 million claim against the city. The church he pastors has also filed its own $750,000 claim. Little was arrested December 14 for failing to maintain a number of structures on property owned by his church, the Full Refuge Gospel Methodist on East 22nd Street. The buildings are one street over and are in various states of disrepair. Little admits one of them will even be torn down. In his claim, dated as received in the city clerk's office Monday, Little alleges false arrest, false charges, civil rights violations, harassment, undue stress and duress, pain and suffering, defamation of character and other allegations. He alleges the city failed to notify him on the needed improvements. Little expressed surprise that Fox6 was aware of the claims Wednesday, even though such claims are a matter of public record. "There's nothing to be ashamed of now, because all the shame has been committed by the arrest," said Little. "And they are false accusations, and public degradation, I think it is." A separate claim was filed by Refuge Full Gospel, signed by church trustee Hollis Davis.
"Church members are telling me how hurt they were, and how people were coming up to them and asking them questions about it." City officials had no comment Wednesday but confirmed Little's misdemeanor case is still pending in Anniston Municipal Court.
