An unidentified body has been found inside Elaine Gentry's recovered Lexus SUV, according to Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry. He broke the news in a press conference this afternoon about 6 p.m. He also said that there appeared to be some body damage to the vehicle and it was discovered upside down in more than 40 feet of water. Curry and Shelby County DA Robby Owens said at the conference that this case will continue as a homicide investigation. Gentry was last seen March 28. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner will be responsible for identifying the body and completing an autopsy. No identification will be made public until family and friends are notifiied. Shelby County investigators have taken possession of Gentry's SUV to begin a forensic examination of the vehicle. Once Gentry's SUV was removed from the quarry, it was placed on a wrecker and slowly emptied of the water inside so that potential evidence would not be compromised. Investigators will cover it for the ride back to Shelby County to protect evidence. Divers worked most of today collecting photographic evidence of the exterior and interior of the vehicle and the surrounding area as it sat more than 40 feet under water. Gentry's SUV was located Tuesday, April 10 by divers, including members from the Calera Dive Team. The vehicle wasn't raised until today because of rain last night, and the difficulty in raising it from such a depth. Sheriff Curry reminded the public tonight that a reward of $10,000 remains in effect for any person that provides information leading to an arrest and conviction of the perpetrator in this case. If you have information you would like to share with investigators, please call 205-669-4181.
