(SUMMERDALE, Ala.) Summerdale Police executed a new search warrant at the Purple Hearted Puppies kennel in Summerdale Thursday. They discovered several dozen more dead animals and seized financial documents pertaining to the business.
Sharon and Roberta Dueitt are now wanted on felony animal cruelty charges and are expected to turn themselves in by Friday morning.
Last week more than 200 animals were found either dead or starving on the Purple Hearted Puppies property and at the Dueitts' home in Robertsdale.
A veterinarian visited the scene with police Thursday to investigate additional corpses found dumped along the fence line.
"She identified several as dogs and several as cats," says Officer Trent Dennis with the Summerdale Police Department. The financial documents police discovered show the so-called non-profit was being financed out of pocket by the Dueitts.
"They had a large sum of money in their account, and now they have none," Dennis says. "Several large checks were cut for the property out here, the businesses and animal shelter in support of the animals."
Another development Thursday: the Baldwin County Humane Society received full legal custody of all the surviving animals. Adoption applications and money continue to pour in.
"We've gotten $31,313 in donations," says BARC! Executive Director Sonja Presley.
As soon as the animals are healthy enough, the humane society can return them to their owners or find them new homes.
If you surrendered or boarded your pet at Purple Hearted Puppies, you should mail a picture and complete description to Info@BaldwinHumane.org. Include breed, age, gender, color, etc....
