A convicted murderer who escaped from a Hale County minimum security prison on Sunday has been recaptured in Ohio. Timothy Richards, 42, went missing during the early Sunday morning hours from the State Cattle Ranch near Greensboro. He apparently escaped sometime between midnight and 1:30 a.m. April 8, when he was noticed missing during an institutional count. Brian Corbett, a spokesperson for the state department of corrections, says authorities believe Richards "had assistance in route to Ohio from a specific individual." U.S. Marshals received information on Wednesday leading them to a specific address in Alliance, Ohio. Richards was taken into custody without incident around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday by the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.
Richards was not armed at the time of his arrest. He was taken to the Stark County Jail where he is waiting to be extradicted to Alabama to serve the remainder of his life sentence, with the additional charge of escape.
Richards is serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole for a 2000 murder conviction. Richards was convicted of the murder of Randy McCullar, one of his wife's other husbands, in 1997. Richard's wife Shonda Johnson is believed to be the mastermind behind the murder plot. Richards was accused of slashing McCullar's tires and shooting him in the head when he pulled over to change the flat. Corbett said Richards was not considered a risk at the Cattle Ranch facility until his escape. He was eligible for parole in May 2013. Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas applauded the U.S. Marshals for their help in locating and apprehending Richards.
"We have five officers assigned to this task force and this was our number one priority. We are thankful that Richards was taken into custody without incident," Thomas said.
Additional charges could be added as the case is still under investigation.
