According to Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Deputies, Charles Edward Jones III jumped off the Bama Belle boat into the Black Warrior River.
Jones drowned and his body was recovered by dive teams the next day.
Captain Lloyd Baker with the Tuscaloosa Homicide Unit said there is no indication of foul play and Jones was standing on the platform on the starboard side of the boat when he jumped off.
After several interviews at the boat dock and a few more back at the police station, Baker said only about four or five people saw Charles Edward Jones III go overboard.
“Most of the people actually just heard the commotion. Maybe heard him go off, heard others say hey someone jumped, but there were a few that actually saw him, including the staff,” Baker said.
Officers said one staff member threw a life ring and a life jacket to Jones when they saw him resurface about thirty yards from the boat.
Baker said, “He had told someone he could swim. We've had other people tell us he couldn't swim. But he did tell his friends that he'd swam in a river before.”
Captain Baker said they don’t think it was a suicide and believe Jones was jumping into the river as a form of celebration.
The Tuscaloosa Homicide Unit is still awaiting final autopsy results and a toxicology report to determine if Jones had alcohol in his system.
