A Sergeant with the Alabama National Guard is murdered in her own home, shot in the head. Now her community wants the killer or killers caught.
It happened off Elm Street in Anniston in the Constantine Homes apartment.
For Taisha Williams and Aalayah Threatt simply walking past Dequirea Royal's home sends chills down their spines. It was here that police found the 24-year-old Army Sergeant shot in the head. "It's crazy for it to happen and nobody see it nor hear it. It's sad," said Williams.
Threatt had just been with Royal a few hours earlier, helping her with the laundry. She left, not thinking it would be the last time she'd see her friend. "It's hard sometimes when I go to sleep I still think about her. It's hard for me to go to sleep," said Threatt.
The shooting happened in the middle of the afternoon. The women say some witnesses reportedly saw several men run out of Royals home following the shooting, but why they would have been there is unclear. Williams says Royal never let anyone in her home and doesn't know of any enemies she may have had. "She was such a sweet person, she would do anything to help anybody and she doesn't mess with anybody," said Williams.
Outside Royals home people had placed flowers, teddy bears, and candles; but Saturday night those items caught on fire, possibly from one of the candles.
While the vigil may be gone, the memory of what happened here is far from gone. And not knowing whose responsible makes matters even worse. "If they are still running around here the police need to do something about it before they hurt somebody else," said Williams.
Royal was a sergeant in the Alabama National Guard. She was assigned to the 167th Forward Support Company in Oxford. Royal was schedule to deploy to Afghanistan in June.
