Counselors will be at Oak Mountain Middle School today to help any students who need to talk about a teacher arrested on sex abuse charges.
38-year-old Jeffrey Atkins is being held on six charges, including three counts of sexual abuse involving a student at Oak Mountain Middle School. The school system discovered phone texts and social media messages between Atkins and a female student at the middle school.
Atkins is a teacher and a band director. He has held that job since 1999.
Shelby County Superintendent Randy Fuller says he was made aware of communications between Atkins and a student Wednesday. The communications included texts and social media and the sheriff's office says they were sexual in nature.
