OXFORD---Next became now in Oxford Wednesday morning.
Ever since lodging 18 tackles in a preseason game in against national powerhouse Hoover as a sophomore, Yellow Jackets linebacker Kwon Alexander has been lauded as the next big thing to come out of Calhoun County’s largest high school.
Wednesday morning, in front of jam-packed crowd filled with well-wishers, the 6-2, 216-pound Under Armour All-American made his next level potential kinetic when he signed a national letter of intent with the LSU Tigers.
ESPNU broadcast the ceremony live as part of its national signing day coverage.
Alexander, who was rated as the nation’s top outside linebacker by ESPN in the preseason, chose the Bayou Bengals over Alabama and Auburn.
Alexander suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the Week 4 game against Austin but remained one of the nation’s most highly-sought-after recruits throughout his recovery.
Tuesday he told The Star he’s at 95 percent and should be more than ready for action when he reports to Death Valley this summer.
Teammate and fellow Under All-American Trae Elston committed to Ole Miss, choosing the Rebels over LSU and Oklahoma State.
Elston took trips to Stillwater, Okla., and Baton Rouge, La., this past weekend. The weekend before he was in Oxford, Miss.
The 6-0, 187-pound Elston, an Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game selection and two-time all-state performer, logged 107 tackles and six interceptions at safety in his senior season. He added 756 yards and 10 touchdowns as receiver.
As expected, Oxford offensive lineman Michael Flint, inked it up with Arkansas State where he committed about two weeks ago. The first-team all-state choice, Under Armour All-American and Alabama-Mississippi game choice had 48 pancake blocks to help Oxford go 12-2 and reach the Class 6A state semifinals.
Oxford offensive lineman Calvin Baker signed with Jacksonville State. Athlete Coty Spurling signed with North Alabama. Wide receiver Dominique Williams signed with Coffeyville Community College (Kan.) and defensive lineman Dez Swink signed with Coahoma Community College (Miss.).
