Oak Mountain Middle School's band director, 38 year old Jeffery Scott Atkins, has been arrested on child sex abuse charges. On March 28, the Shelby County Board of Education contacted the Alabama Department of Human Resources and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office to request assistance with an investigation of possible inappropriate contact between Atkins and a student. Investigators determined that communication between the two, via phone texts and social media outlets was sexual in nature.
Atkins was arrested in Montgomery County Thursday. He is charged with 3 counts of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, 1 count of Enticing a Child for Immoral Purposes, 1 county of Electronic Solicitation of a Child, and 1 count of School Employee having Sexual Contact with a student Under 19. Atkins remains in the Shelby County Jail on a $555,000 bond.
