ANNISTON - AL - It's chance to stand up.
" We have to kill the spirit of apathy , people not caring anymore," said Sayram Salase
A chance to speak your mind.
" Parents need to get control of their kids , not the teacher, not the sheriff," said grandmother Mae Thomas " Parents are scared of their kids . It should n't be. You take me to jail I'm going to whoop one of mine." A cross section of people, mostly adults, gather at Anniston's Carver Center for a forum violence and police relations forum. It's part of a series of AEA week events for Anniston families presented by Anniston and area organizations. It was an opportunity listen closely to passionate people pour out their hearts
" It's hard for me to go up to a kid and say ' why aren't you in school? Your parents are working ", said one woman "The first thing that's going to come back is ' you're in my business. What are we to do ? "
" We all have a responsibility. Black and white . We must come together," said another woman
Strengthening police relations with the community is seen as a key by many. Panelist, Anniston police chief Layton McGrady, revealed police are working with a recently formed group called Real Men of Anniston in an effort to build stronger relationships. " We're trying to get out there, but you've got to meet us half way, come at us with an open mind," said Chief Mc Grady Panelist, community activist Telesa Stanford, responded by telling the audience a story about a person who complained to a city leader about alleged poor treatment by police. Stanford said the official told them Anniston police was the best police force around "Part of the problem, if I'm a city official and someone came to me about a concern about how they were being treated by police, I would have, at least, taken them seriously, and not cut them off," said Stanford She contended that response does not help residents feel comfortable about coming forward to talk with authorities. "It puts you on the defensive."
