Blazers begin Garrick McGee era as spring practice begins

UAB football coach Garrick McGee saw his team on the field together for the first time Wednesday as the Blazers opened their spring practice period with a night session on campus.
Hired in December, McGee has spent his first months on the job with his staff evaluating players on film and in meeting rooms. On Wednesday, they worked the team out in shorts and helmets for a little over an hour and a half.
"It was fun," McGee said. "We had a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm, which is important to me. I think our kids have bought into trying to do things right. It was the first day; there were things that were sloppy out here. But I'm really impressed with the way our kids came out and tried to concentrate and focus and do things right."
As all practices this spring will be, Wednesday's session was open to the public. Fans turned out to line the practice field and get their first look at the core of next year's team.
The workout under the lights featured a fast pace with players moving from station to station as the team began the process of learning a new system on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
"The only way to play is fast," McGee said. "You only get so many hours of work on the field. I believe in having fast practices, getting a bunch of reps. That's the only way to get better and become a good football team, so tempo is important."
McGee said he wants to see continued concentration on technique and effort as his team moves through this four-week practice period, installing more and more portions of the playbook as spring practice progresses.
That progression will continue on Friday when the Blazers return to the practice field for the second of 15 scheduled sessions with a 5 p.m. workout.
The practices all build toward UAB's 2012 Spring Game, which is scheduled for Noon on Saturday, April 21 at West Campus Field.
