A big step in the recovery of a Leeds High School wrestler. He's back at school for the first time since he was paralyzed during a match. Tanner Hunter is going through a lot of therapy and has gone from not being able to move anything below his chest to now moving arms. After his injury in December, he spent two months at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, where he was weened-off of a ventilator and went through some aggressive physical therapy. He returned home to Leeds March 14th. Tanner says it's been so difficult not doing anything on his own now.
He relies on his mom, dad, and brothers to help him with just about everything. Despite all of that, Tanner remains optimistic. Since he's been home, he's gotten stronger. He says the smallest movements mean a lot after a spinal cord injury like his. His parents are very encouraged by his progress. Christy Hunter, Tanner's mom said, "It's wonderful, great because if you are able to use arms, much more able to be independent so for him to gain strength in short amount of time." Tanner Hunter said, "I want to walk. I'm going to. It's going to take time. But it'll eventually happen. The harder I work, faster it'll come." Tanner was so happy to return back to school Tuesday. The school held a "welcome back assembly" for him. It's his senior year, so his goal was to get back to school and graduate with his class. He has plans to go to college. But first, he's going to take a year to get stronger and go through more rehab. Tanner's dad shared with me how gracious people have been since tanner returned home. His neighbors came over and built ramps for Tanner's wheelchair and built a handicap-accessible shower for Tanner in the house. And a car dealership donated a handicap-accessible van to the family. So Mr. and Mrs. Hunter couldn't say enough about all of the support from the Leeds community.
