Alabama Crimson Tide fans may be conflicted about their new license plates, with perhaps the name of the most "hated" player from their most "hated" rival slapped on it. A CBS Sports blog reported Wednesday that 1,000 of the new "Roll Tide Roll" plates coming out have the tag prefix, "C-A-M." Auburn quarterback Cam Newton led the Tigers to a national championship during the 2010 season, including a 24-point comeback win against Alabama. Since there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 17,000 three-letter combinations, the odds of this happening by accident are not good. Many may presume there is an Auburn fan within the Motor Vehicle Division with a (good or bad, depending on your loyalties) sense of humor. Some Auburn fans may believe it's a small case of "what goes around and around and around and around comes around." Newton gained notoriety not only for his football abilities. An NCAA investigation determined his father, Cecil Newton, had sought payment from Mississippi State University in exchange for his son signing with the team and banned him from games.
The investigation found no wrongdoing from Cam Newton or Auburn. The license plate costs $50, which goes to support the University of Alabama. No word yet if there have been any returns.
