The Alabama Department of Public Health says there is no hepatitis A outbreak in Tuscaloosa County and as of Thursday, only one case has been confirmed. The single case was found in an employee of a Northport McDonald's. "At this time, no additional cases have been identified. I want to thank the owner and managers of the McDonald's at 2000 McFarland Blvd. for sending the food handler home as soon as they knew he was sick. Their quick response was the best prevention to protect the community, since the most common way to transmit hepatitis A is person to person," Dr. Donald Williamson, a state health officer, said Thursday. The Tuscaloosa County Health Department vaccinated 260 people against hepatitis A on Wednesday, March 28 after news of the hepatitis A infection broke. Customers who visited the Northport McDonalds on March 14 or during breakfast hours of March 16 can still receive hepatitis A vaccines at the county health department through Friday, March 30. The health department is located at 2350 Hargrove Road East and the phone number is (205) 562-6900. Health officials say anyone who visited the McDonald's prior to March 14 should continue to look for symptoms of hepatitis A, which can show up two to six weeks after exposure. Common symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness, pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, dark urine, light stools and jaundice (yellowness of eyes or skin). The disease varies in severity, from mild cases lasting 2 weeks or less, to more severe, cases lasting 4 to 6 weeks or longer, according to the state health department. The state health department is continuing to monitor the Tuscaloosa County community for any additional hepatitis A cases.
