Legislation is pending right now in Montgomery that would allow charter schools in Alabama. It's a divided issue and both opponents and supporters of the bill spoke out at two different meetings Tuesday.
"We want you to stand with us and say we're against this." And the Birmingham Board of Education did just that. They unanimously voted on a resolution opposing charter school legislation pending in Montgomery. Governor Bentley unveiled "The Education Option Act of 2012" two weeks ago. It would provide parents and students in failing schools more educational opportunities through the establishment of charter schools. Superintendent Craig Witherspoon says the board stands by its view. "We do have low performing schools and school districts should be held accountable to make sure we do things to make sure students are achieving." Opponents say charter schools would take money away from cash strapped public schools. But supporters have a different perspective. Kenneth Campbell with the Black Alliance for Educational Options says "parents need more options in terms of being able to access quality in education and we're hopeful people in Alabama are going to get an opportunity to learn more about charter schools and whether they're a good solution for families here."
Charter schools are not operated by the local district and offer open enrollment. While opponents will be rallying at the state capital April 14th, supporters hope people will research charter schools to learn more.
